Cats and dogs are not only a big part of our life, but play a large part in the U.S. economy. According to a survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association a survey of pet owners in the U.S. (2005-2006) showed that there were 73 million owned dogs in the U.S. and 90 million owned cats. Business trends for 2007 project a continuing increase in pet-related spending.
Pet owners are focusing more on health related issues in regards to their cats and dogs. They are realizing the virtue of things like feeding premium pet foods, having pets spayed or neutered and getting routine veterinary care to help extend the life of their pet.
It's no secret that pets are good for our health. Studies have shown that they help us fight depression, lower our blood pressure, reduce stress and prevent heart disease. Perhaps this realization has been a part of the increase in pet health awareness - keeping them healthy helps keep us healthy.
